Building a Change-of-Plane Waterproofing Mockup
A change-of-plane mockup should demonstrate the complete corner arrangement and installation sequence. It can reveal missing pieces or uncertain interfaces before the same condition is repeated across bathrooms, terraces or roof upstands.

Selection considerations
Select representative corners from the drawings, including different adjoining substrates or finish layers. Use the selected system's actual components and preparation method. A loose tape bent around a cardboard angle does not demonstrate the complete project assembly.
Review terminations, overlaps and access for the proposed method against the supplier's detail. Keep movement and water-control requirements visible in the review. Where several trades meet at the corner, identify which party prepares the substrate and which party accepts each stage.
Retain the accepted mockup and record the conditions it covers. Any required testing should follow the project's agreed procedure and be documented separately. Use the mockup during inspections, but do not present it as blanket approval of different corners or substituted materials.
Before you specify or order
- Select representative corner interfaces
- Use the actual system components
- Agree the installation sequence
- Record the approval scope

Common question
Can one mockup approve every change of plane?
Only within its documented scope. Different substrates, components or geometries may require further review.
