Controlling Metal Finish Samples from Approval to Delivery
Metal finish approval should travel with the product from sample review to delivery. A controlled sample record prevents broad labels such as brushed or anodised from being mistaken for a complete appearance specification.

Selection considerations
Record the section code, material, finish designation and sample source. Review the sample with adjoining materials under the intended room lighting. Directional textures and reflected light can make two finishes appear different even when a supplier uses similar terminology.
Retain a protected control sample and agree the delivery comparison method. Keep different profiles identified separately; the same finish name does not make their cross-sections interchangeable. Ask the supplier to clarify any finish options that remain unspecified in the catalogue record.
At receipt, document the accepted batch and any unresolved variation before installation. Store the control sample with the project finish schedule so later replacements can be compared consistently. If an alternative finish is approved, update the schedule rather than leaving the original approval attached to a changed order.
Before you specify or order
- Record material and finish designation
- Retain a control sample
- Agree comparison conditions
- Update approved substitutions

Common question
Can two brushed finishes be treated as identical?
Not from the name alone. Compare the actual finish samples, texture direction and supplier references.
